5 Tips for Incentive Trips

Events are experiences, and an incentive trip is an incredible way for employees to experience recognition, community and spontaneity. An incentive trip is a component of an employee recognition program and is designed to encourage performance, foster loyalty and increase performance.

An incentive trip can vary in length, number of attendees, location and schedule; however, the logistics are always numerous. Without careful planning and attention to detail, the earned experience can be more of a travel nightmare than a reward vacation. Here are some tips to plan an incentive trip that is smooth and memorable:

Be Mindful of Wellness

A trend in the incentive travel industry is wellness. Include opportunities for your attendees to practice mindfulness and fitness. This may include beach yoga or a fun run on-site. Be aware of your menu choices and include options that are healthy and cater to all dietary needs. Setting up a hydro-bar or choices like build-your-own trail mix are also popular options.

Over-Communicate

It is crucial attendees know what is expected of them, understand the schedule, and don’t need to ask any questions of you to help them have a great experience. Provide details with plenty of notice about the schedule for the experience, what activities are mandatory versus optional, provide packing suggestions and continue to share highlights of what guests can expect from the activities and property!

Celebrate Again & Again!

Incentive trips are an honor for the employee who earned them. Make them feel special with personalized recognition such as their favorite drink or snack waiting in their room upon arrival. Find time to be sure all honorees are recognized and thanked for their hard-work and recognition. Continue to find moments throughout the trip to surprise & delight your guests.

Research Your Destination

Prior to selecting the location of your incentive trip, research the destination and host a site visit. Consider location from the airport, convenience to activities and dining, and site amenities. Know your company culture and what elements may be most important to them such as on-site spa, pool, golf, bar, restaurant, etc. Be sure you also visit a guest room and can picture your qualifiers appreciating the rooms too.

Connect Before and After the Trip

You can encourage sales pre-trip by promoting the event throughout the sales year by special surprises such as sending your employees snacks specific to the region you will be attending. When the qualifiers are selected, send a specialized invite that sets the tone and theme for the trip. After the event, keep wowing your attendees by sending frames with photos from the event.
